Cool Memo is a privacy-first voice memo app for iPhone and Android. The app does not require a Cool Memo account, and recording works without cloud setup.
Information Stored on the Device
Cool Memo stores memo information locally on the user's device by default. This may include:
- Audio recordings.
- Memo titles, dates, duration, favorite status, notes, and tags.
- Transcripts, summaries, action items, and processing status when available.
- App preferences such as app language, appearance, transcription language, translation language, and privacy choices.
- Optional memo location information only when the user enables location storage.
- On Android, local purchase unlock status for Cool Memo Pro.
Recording works offline. Audio is saved locally before transcript, summary, action-item, location, translation, or sharing features are used.
Permissions
Cool Memo asks for microphone access when the user starts recording. Microphone access is used to create voice memos.
If the user enables location storage, the app may ask for location permission to attach a location to a memo after the audio has been saved. Location storage is optional and does not block recording.
On Android, the app may ask for notification permission and uses a foreground recording service so the system can show active recording status. On iOS, the app may use Live Activities for active recording status where supported. Notifications, widgets, and live status surfaces do not include memo content, transcripts, summaries, action items, notes, tags, or locations.
Transcription, Summaries, and Action Items
Cool Memo may use the speech recognition services provided by the operating system to create transcripts. On iOS, this uses Apple's Speech framework. On Android, this uses Android speech recognition where available. These platform services may process audio or transcript data according to Apple or Google system settings and terms.
Live transcript text is provisional and is shown only inside the app while recording. The saved local audio remains the source for the final transcript. If transcription or processing fails, the original audio remains stored unless the user deletes the memo.
Current summary and action-item features are generated inside the app from the saved transcript. Cool Memo does not upload memo audio, transcripts, summaries, action items, notes, tags, or locations to a Cool Memo server.
Translation
Transcript translation is started by the user from a saved memo. On iOS, translation uses Apple's on-device Translation framework where available. On Android, translation uses Google ML Kit Translation and language identification.
Android translation may require internet access to download language packs after the user confirms. Downloaded language models are stored locally by Google ML Kit and can be deleted from the app settings. After the required language model is installed, translation runs locally on the device.
Sharing and Export
Sharing is user-initiated through the native iOS or Android share sheet. The user may choose to share memo text, transcript text, translated transcript text, or audio. When the user shares a memo, the selected destination's privacy policy applies.
Purchases
Cool Memo is distributed through the App Store and Google Play. Store purchases and payment processing are handled by Apple or Google. Cool Memo does not receive or store payment card details. On Android, the app uses Google Play Billing to check and restore the local unlock state for Cool Memo Pro.
Backups and Device Transfer
Cool Memo does not operate a cloud backup or sync service. On Android, app backup and device-transfer rules exclude the local recordings folder and memo database. On iOS, device backup behavior is controlled by Apple and the user's iCloud or device backup settings.
What Cool Memo Does Not Do
- No required account.
- No ads.
- No tracking.
- No analytics on memo content.
- No required cloud storage.
- No Cool Memo server upload for current memo processing features.
- No sale of personal information.
Website
The public website at https://coolmemo.net is a static Netlify-hosted site. Netlify and related hosting infrastructure may process limited technical information such as IP address, user agent, request metadata, timestamps, logs, and security data needed to operate and protect the website.
Data Security
Reasonable technical and organizational measures are used to protect information processed by the application. Memo content should not be printed to application logs.
Children's Privacy
Cool Memo is not specifically directed toward children under the age of 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
